US Delegation Exits UN Meeting Over France's Remarks
The United States delegation took the unusual step of walking out of a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday. This action was in response to comments by France, which compared the US voting pattern on human rights matters to that of countries with authoritarian regimes.
The diplomatic friction began the previous week when the United States cast a vote alongside North Korea and Russia against extending the term of Volker Turk as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Following the vote on Friday, France criticized the US, equating its actions with those of North Korea and Russia.
France's UN mission stated on X, "The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore." In retaliation, US Ambassador Mike Waltz accused France of supporting a human rights chief who had been "lecturing" democratic nations while maintaining relationships with oppressive regimes, though he did not provide further details.
France's Criticism and US Reaction
Volker Turk has been known for his criticisms of Russia's military actions in Ukraine and Israel's operations in Gaza. The US delegation's walkout occurred while French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont was delivering remarks during an emergency session on the Ukraine conflict.
US Ambassador Dan Negrea stated that the US would continue such protests until France "renounces their condescending and disrespectful rhetoric." The debate over Turk's reappointment, which was approved with 144 countries in favor, 10 opposed, and 13 abstaining, highlights ongoing tensions between Washington and the United Nations.
US Position on UN Engagement
Amid these tensions, the US has been critical of the UN, especially during the Trump administration, which reduced funding to UN agencies and pulled out from several of its entities. On Friday, US Ambassador Jeff Bartos criticized the reappointment of Turk and warned of "consequences" for the Assembly due to what he termed "procedural overreach, backroom deals, and misuse of UN posts." He stated that "The United States will immediately reassess our engagement, participation, and funding."
In contrast, French Ambassador Bonnafont praised Turk, describing him as "a voice of conscience" and commending his "rigor and impartiality" during his initial term. Deputy UN spokesperson Farhan Haq refrained from commenting on the US walkout and emphasized that the UN expects all member states to respect its decisions.
