Firefighters in France Battle Escalating Wildfires
In the Gironde region of south-west France, firefighters are tirelessly working to manage wildfires that have intensified with the approach of a new heatwave predicted to bring temperatures soaring to 40°C. Eric Brocardi, spokesperson for the national firefighters' federation, likened their efforts to a 'David against Goliath' battle. Tragically, four firefighters have lost their lives in recent weeks across the country, and around 2,000 personnel have been deployed specifically in Gironde to combat the flames.
Regional prefect Sophie Brocas reported that 14 locations previously impacted by fires experienced renewed outbreaks on Tuesday. "We are not in the clear," she stated, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the emergency services.
Impacts Across the Region
This latest heatwave, the fourth of the summer, is expected to affect not only France but also Spain, where high temperatures are anticipated. In Spain, over 70,000 residents have been evacuated due to the threat of wildfires, though many have since returned home. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged the difficult conditions but expressed optimism about the situation improving.
In Portugal, about 400 firefighters are engaged in controlling a large fire with three active fronts in the eastern Guarda region, further illustrating the widespread impact of these fires across Europe.
Bordeaux Remains on Alert
While the city of Bordeaux, home to 260,000 people, is currently not directly threatened, the proximity of the fires—just 15 kilometers from the city's edge—remains a concern. Commander Rémi Lassoureille, leading the firefighting efforts in Gironde, expressed worries about the potential impact on Bordeaux and its surroundings.
The air quality in Bordeaux has deteriorated significantly, leading to many residents and tourists wearing masks. A holidaymaker from Essex described the city as "eerie and very sad," with the air filled with smoke and ash, causing businesses to temporarily close.
Evacuations and Damage
The Gironde prefect ordered new evacuations from coastal camping sites near Lacanau, while advising residents in nearby towns to be prepared for sudden evacuations. This adds to the 220,000 people evacuated across France in recent days, with approximately 240 homes reported destroyed.
A 23-year-old man was arrested in the Var region on suspicion of starting a fire and faces up to 15 years in prison. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 184 individuals had been detained since early July in connection with the fires.
Economic and Environmental Impacts
The fires have also affected local businesses, particularly in the hospitality and wine sectors. Peggy Plouhinec, director of Château Picque Caillou, noted that despite not being directly threatened, the smoke forced her business to close temporarily, and the region has seen a decline in tourist numbers.
Residents of areas like Cap Ferret, recently evacuated, voiced concerns about the environmental devastation. "Everyone talks about saving Bordeaux, but here, there are only trees, and when you see all that has burned, it's a catastrophe," one resident remarked.
